2015: THE RESTORATION

The Torre Arcobaleno, a recognizable mark on the city and emotional landscape of Milan, and symbol of the capital of fashion and design, has been restored to its original splendour thanks to the restoration work carried out by Bazzea-B Construction Technology, Condor, Row Solutions, Mapei and Marazzi, with the patronage of the public works and site amenities Department of the Milan City Council and the hospitality of the State Railways.

Behind the project is the Architecture Division of the Milan firm Original Designers 6R5 Network, and in particular the professionals Francesco Roggero, Albino Pozzi, Rita Alfano Roggero and Kiyoto Ishimoto.
Work costs were fully borne by the companies and architects involved in the project, ac-cording to the basic intent of the operation: a tribute to Milan and to the visitors who come to the city for Expo 2015.

The Tower was created twenty-five years ago, to mark the Soccer World Cup hosted by Italy in 1990, when the same firm, Original Designers 6R5 Network and the companies Mapei, Marazzi and Tadini refurbished the anonymous water tower located within the area of the large Milano Porta Garibaldi railway yard, donating to the city a brightly coloured symbol of Milanese creativity.

For the Garibaldi area, today redesigned around Piazza Gae Aulenti, the Torre Arcobaleno is a “Colourful Ceramic Totem”, recalling the Master Italian Ceramists and the artisan origins of an industry recognized around the world as a feather in the cap of Made in Italy

bazzea

BAZZEA
Tower Renovation and Works
As far as Torre Arcobaleno repair works, Bazzea, in charge of the technical management of the construction site, was responsible with its people of the various stages during the 25 days of maintenance. They started by cleaning the 1,000 square metres of ceramic surfaces, which had been attacked by fine dust at the top and metals – in particular iron – at the bottom. They then went on to remove the graffiti that was defacing the surface, protecting it, once the job was completed, using special anti-graffiti paint. After, they replaced all missing and damaged tiles and repaired and painted the 24 35-metre-high concrete ribs. Finally, to better weatherproof the structure, they covered the tower roof using a double waterproofing sheathing.

condor

CONDOR S.P.A
Supply and installation – Structures and scaffolding
Close to the issues related to new construction and to urban regeneration, for Expo 2015, Condor took part in the Torre Arcobaleno restoration project.
Condor oversaw design, providing the equipment and the most innovative and safest systems available on the market. The scaffolding used is Multicom. The main feature of this system is the multi-directional crosspiece and upright anchoring coupling: this made it possible to adapt the scaffolding to the sometimes convex shape of the Tower, in a way uniform and adherent to the circular wall, with a system of internal overhangs realized by means of specific accessories. Thanks to the performance of the system, the structure was built to the very highest quality standards, and in a very short time, without impacting the architectural shape of the Tower.

fila
FILA SOLUTIONS
Technical Surface Cleaning Products
FILA Surface Care Solutions, brand of excellence in treatment of ceramic and stone surfaces, carried out cleaning and protection of the external façade of the Torre Arcobaleno, restoring its colours and brightness to their original beauty of 15 years ago.

The glazed ceramic tiles, ruined by rust and impregnated by smog, were treated by the company with FILA PHZERO, the concentrated acid descaler that effectively removes dirt and is ideal for vertical walls thanks to its viscous consistency.

A specific product was chosen by FILA to remove the graffiti on the lower part of the tower: FILA NOPAINT STAR, the perfect solution for removal of graffiti from walls. Finally, effective protection for the tiles was provided with application of FILASTOP DIRT, the dirt-repellent, anti-graffiti protector for textured and unglazed porcelain tiles that forms an invisible barrier on the surface, thus preventing the accumulation of dirt for easier, quicker cleaning.

mapei

MAPEI
Technical Adhesives – Renovation Products – Coating Products
As far as Torre Arcobaleno repair works, Mapei intervention included preparation of the surfaces by removing the tiles that had become detached, a thorough clean of all the surfaces, removal of the crumbling areas and then a repaint.
Going into detail, Mapei supplied Mapefer 1K and Planitop Rasa&Ripara for the repair work on the concrete ribs. The uprights of the tower were then painted with Elastocolor Primer and Elastocolor Waterproof. To bond and grout the new tiles, Mapei provided Ultralite S1 and Ultracolor Plus. Finally the joints were sealed with Mapesil LM.
To repair the waterproof layer on the round roof of Torre Arcobaleno the Mapei Group subsidiary company Polyglass, made a further contribution to the project by supplying Idroprimer, Polyflex Light, Polyflex Light Mineral and Mineralfix.
